CASE Tools : The CAD system for database designers

In today's software development projects, the use of good CASE Tools (Computer Aided Software Engineering) can be a performance booster for meeting both time and quality requirements.

Case Studio As you may have noticed, I have used Oracle's Designer SW for my modeling examples. It's a great tool, but it comes with a harsh price-tag, and in addition, it is primarily aimed at generating DDL scripts for Oracle databases.

So, I have looked at other tools, both for price as well as flexibility, and I have come up with CASE Studio 2 as my choice. Not only is it stand-alone, it supports all databases I have heard about, and the price is such that we all may afford our own case tools.

The features of CASE Studio 2 are abundant: What I like most, is the reverse engineering ability: I have used reverse engineering with several case tools, and it is a technique that instantly gives you a supreme picture of what state (quality) a given system is in.

CASE Studio 2, with its features as well as price, is, in my opinion, a best buy when it comes to case tools. They offer a free demo download, so you have nothing to lose. Let us look at just a few of the features I find most important:

  • Reverse engineering from a multitude of database systems
  • Forward engineering (code generation) to a multitude of database systems
  • Supports Functions, Procedures, Triggers, Views, Packages, Package bodies, Object types, Object type bodies, Sequences and Synonyms as Text Objects (it depends on target database)
  • You can also create patterns for triggers, views and procedures. Of course, all the Text Objects and other parts of the entity relationship diagrams could be reverse engineered from already existing database structures.
  • Entity relationship diagrams
  • Support for various databases
  • Generation of SQL (DDL) scripts
  • Generation of detailed HTML and RTF documentation
  • Data Flow Diagrams
  • Export into XML format etc...

The product comes with a free trial/demo download. The demo version is not time limited, so you can test it as long as necessary, and includes only the two following restrictions: You cannot save a model with more than 6 entities and the Version Manager is disabled. I strongly recommend you to test it out:

It is also delivered as a LITE version, without reverse engineering capability:
